How many players are retained by 10 IPL Franchise?

With 46 players have already been retained by the 10 IPL franchises, others will enter the bidding war. Before the list was announced the BCCI had trimmed down its initial list of 1,574 players to a final 574-strong pool for the upcoming IPL auction.

Apart from buying the players from the auction pool, teams can use RTM for a few players to fill up their squad, According to the IPL’s retention rules, each franchise can keep a maximum of six players from the previous season. These spots can be secured through direct retentions or by utilizing the Right to Match (RTM) card. The RTM card allows a franchise to match the bid of another team for a player they previously released. Teams can only use this option if they have available slots from their six-player retention limit (e.g., 5 retentions and 1 RTM, or 4 retentions and 2 RTMs). The RTM rule has also been revised for the IPL 2025 auction. Unlike in previous years, where a franchise could match the winning bid and acquire their player at the same price, the new rule gives the winning team the option to raise the bid after the RTM is used. If the original franchise decides to match the increased bid, they can secure the player back.
