The Chandigarh-born cricketer Ramandeep Singh, who represents Punjab in the domestic circuit, has featured for two teams in the Indian Premier League. Recently, he made his debut against South Africa in the third T20I, marking his entry onto the international stage.
Ramandeep Singh was born on 13 April 1997 in Chandigarh. Known for his power game with the bat and excellence in the field, Ramandeep, much like his idol Andre Russell, is an explosive lower middle-order batter and a wily medium pacer.
He has represented Punjab in domestic cricket, making his T20 debut in the 2016–17 Inter-State T20 Tournament against Haryana at Nadaun on 29 January 2017. Later, he made his List A debut on 5 October 2019 against Vidarbha at Vadodara in the 2019–20 Vijay Hazare Trophy. He made his first-class debut on 12 February 2020 against Bengal in the 2019–20 Ranji Trophy.
Since then, he has scored 559 runs in 21 innings in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy for Punjab, with a high score of 54 off 23 balls against Odisha in 2021. He maintains a strike rate of 165.68, which showcases his power-hitting abilities. In List A, he has accumulated 397 runs across 18 innings, with a high score of 80, and has two fifties to his name. He also took a hat-trick in the 2022 Vijay Hazare Trophy, with Ambati Rayudu as one of his victims, and a five-wicket haul against Baroda. Although he has not played much first-class cricket, he has made a good impact, scoring 167 runs across four matches with an unbeaten 69 as his highest.
Ahead of the mega auction in February 2022, the five-time champion side Mumbai Indians bought the Chandigarh hitter for the 2022 Indian Premier League tournament after he impressed at their trials. Mumbai purchased him for INR 20 lakh. Representing Mumbai in five matches, he couldn’t make much impact with the bat due to limited opportunities, scoring 45 runs. However, with the ball, he claimed six wickets, with his best figures of 3/20 against Sunrisers Hyderabad. With limited opportunities at Mumbai, he was released, and in 2024 Kolkata Knight Riders acquired the all-rounder for the same price. Playing all 15 matches for the champion side, he scored 125 runs across nine innings, remaining unbeaten in five, with a high score of 35 against SRH in the first game. His power-hitting was evident, reflected in his 201.61 strike rate.
His performance for KKR impressed them enough to retain him ahead of the mega auction for IPL 2025. As an uncapped player at the time, he was retained for Rs 4 crore as their 6th retention.
In addition, he represented India A in the Emerging Asia Cup 2024, scoring 64 runs against Afghanistan A in the semi-finals on 25 October 2024 at Al Amerat, which led to his maiden call-up to the international setup.
In the ongoing India tour of South Africa, with both sides tied at 1-1, he was handed his debut cap in the third T20I by all-rounder Hardik Pandya. Ramandeep came to bat at number 7 on the last ball of the 18th over and played an impactful knock. Partnering with the set batter Tilak Verma, he hit his first international delivery for a six against Andile Simelane. In the last two overs, he smashed a boundary and took a couple of quick singles. Facing six balls, he scored 15 runs with a strike rate of 250, before being dismissed via a run-out on the penultimate ball of the Indian innings, boosting India’s total to 219, he showed a glimpse of his hard-hitting abilities.
